Reading of “The Mikveh” by Avivah Zornberg
I step into the water, my body
dissolving into the ritual.
Each ripple a prayer, each wave a breath,
this is the ocean of beginnings,
the current of forgetting.
With each immersion, I am
stripped of the dust of the earth,
of the remnants of the past.
I emerge again, clean as the day I was born,
water lapping at the edges of my skin,
echoing the voice of creation,
whispering the promise of renewal.

‘Almost Noon…It May Rain’
Haven’t prayed in a long time.
Not sure what that means.
Almost noon…it may rain.
Maybe I pray often—without knowing.
Without form.
Why do I always look out to the sky when I think of prayer?
Maybe I should look in.
Almost noon…
It may rain.
Is it going to rain?
Oh—just give me rain.
Wash my body.
Wash my soul.
I remember wading through water,
looking up at the sky.
Give me blue.
Give me light.
Give me wings.
Too much noise.
Too many thoughts.
It may rain.
I am made from earth—muddy toes, porous skin.
Water in my eyes.
Water in my bones.
Almost noon…
It may rain.
This may be the prayer.
Or the yearning.
Let it rain.
Almost noon…
Let it rain.
